Windows Vista Tricks

Windows Vista Tip: 12 Hidden Windows Explorer Tricks

When Microsoft re-designed Vista's Windows Explorer interface, much added functionality was included compared to previous versions of Windows. While some of the functionality is easily notice, a lot of built-in hidden features are not easily found or realized.

To help find these features in Vista's Window Explorer, below list the 12 hidden tricks that are easy to find while others are not.

Address Bar

If you are not used to viewing the path as Breadcrumb Trails and want to view the full path (Windows XP style), left click anywhere to the right of the path in the Address bar which will display XP style full path. To return to Breadcrumb Trails view, press the Esc key. (Clicking where circle is shown in Address Bar, will display XP style full path).
To quickly create a shortcut to the location you are viewing, right click anywhere to the right of the path in the Address Bar and select Copy Address. This will put the text of the path in the clipboard allowing you to switch to your Desktop (for example) and right click and Paste Shortcut. Since the path is stored in the clipboard, it can also be pasted in a document, email, and so on…
If you are in a deeply nested folder where the Address Bar does not have room to show the entire path, click on the double arrows to the left of the first item (in Address Bar). Clicking this will show the parent folders that don't fit on the Address Bar.
Another feature found, to the right of the Back and Forward buttons (just before the Address Bar) is the Recent Items drop down button. Items displayed in this list are recently visited locations that you can select and jump to the location with needing to navigate using Explorer.

Details Pane

To enable, select Organize (on Command Bar) / Layout / Details Pane. When a document , spreadsheet, etc.. is highlighted, certain Category properties in the bottom details pane can be modified to add tags, subject, titles, etc.. by mousing over the field (which displays the box) next to the Category. When finished, click the Save bttom to the right of the Details pane.

Command Bar

To choose different folder view options, repeating clicking on the word Views in the Command bar will rotate through the different view options such as Details, List, Small Icons, etc…

Preview Pane

To enable the Preview Pane select Organize (on Command Bar) / Layout / Preview Pane. Once enabled, clicking on certain files (text, documents, spreadsheets) will display the contents of the file (read only view) without needing to open the file. When selecting a media item, a miniature player is displayed.

Filtering Folder Content Views

Moving your mouse over a Heading will display a drop-down arrow. Clicking on the down arrow will display a set of filtering options (check boxes) that can be set for viewing items in the column.

Notice after selecting filters, a check mark will appear to the right of the Header notifing you that filters are set for that column, and the values on which you have filtered (for example Date, File Type, Application Extensions, etc) will display in the Address Bar (clicking on the arrows before the values in the Address Bar will allow you to change the filter).
To clear a set of filtering criteria, click to the left of the criteria on the Address Bar. In the example screenshot above, clicking on Office11 returns the folder to it's unfiltered state. To quickly return to the filtered state, click the back button (circled in above screenshot, left of the Address Bar)

Since filtering is tied to the search engine in Vista, if you did not find what you are looking for when filtering, click Search in Subfolders found at the bottom of the filtered folder to extend the search.

    -> Add Your Drive Icon

    -> Add Information and Image in My Computer

    -> Editing The Right Click Menu

    -> Restore Your Computers Performance

Make Autorun CD

    If you wanna make a autorun file for that CD you are ready to burn just read this...

    1) Open notepad

    2) now write:

      [autorun]
      OPEN=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXE
      ICON=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXE

      Now save it as a "Autorun.inf" file not a .txt file.

      But remember! The "Setup_filename.EXE" MUST be replaced with the name of the setup file. And you also need to rember that it is not all of the setup files there are called '.exe but some are called '.msi

    3) Now burn your CD with the autorun.inffile included.

    4) Now set the CD in you CD drive and wait for the autorun to
    begin or if nothing happens just double - click on the CD drive
    in "This Computer"

Editing The Boot.ini File

    Boot.ini file is an initialization file, but editing it some people has been made Mistake.In this post i will let you know the codes and their meaning and also how to edit them easily. By default this is hidden in Xp.
    To access the file in Xp :-

      -> Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

      -> Go to the Advanced tab and click Settings in Startup and
      Recovery section.

      -> Click Edit and you will see the Boot.ini file opened in a
      notepad.

      Now File says something like this :-

      [boot loader]
      timeout=30
      default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

      [operating systems]
      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

      The First line [Boot loader] just states the Booting Process.

      timeout=30 is the time that will be provided to you to select from the list of OS's installed. This works only in case you have multiple OS's installed. It can be reduced easily, but make sure you give enough time to react upon it. 10 Seconds is the appropriate time.

      The third line says:
      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect.

      -> multi(0) tells us the IDE on which the drive is attached to.
      Usually its Primary only.

      -> disk(0) shows the number of Hard disks mounted.

      -> rdisk(0) tells us from which disk it is booting. In case of SCSI drives, it might not show up.

      -> partition(1) tell that on which Logical partition the OS is installed on. After that it says "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" that is the name that shows up on the OS selection page. You can put your own name there as well.

      If someone edits it and puts in the wrong information, then it you system will find the file but not the correct path. So that might harm your Computer.

    [{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]

Editing The Right Click Menu

    When you install any software then they add themselves to the right click menu. This slows down the system as well, as it needs to get all the files ready when you right click.

    Especially the software like WinRar, which add lots of option to your Right Click menu. We don't require all, and we require some options for some kind of files , so we can remove many options to make our menu open faster.

    This can be done through Registry editing. Here is the Registry Setting.

    1. Go to Run and type in Regedit.
    2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ ROOT\*\shellex\ ContextMenuHandlers,
    This is the where programs attach to right click menu, This is a
    universal right click.
    To make the specific right clicks, you need to
    go to specific type of file in this section.

    3. You simply delete the keys you do not want.

Restore Your Computers Performance

    If you think that your computer is not giving that kind of performance that it was giving about six months or a year back when it was new,
    then might your systems performance has degraded. This does happens with due course of time , with the softwares being installed and un-installed from the computer.

    If you are using Windows Xp then this OS does contain some tools that might help you restoring your computers performance.

    Just before trying all, do take Backup of your data. At least for the Root directory.

    * Remove Unused Programs :

    Now this is the most common tip that must be followed to make a good start. As soon as you decide that you wont be using that software anymore, go ahead and uninstall it from Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs. These softwares when unused remains in your computer and lowers its performance. You might need to restart your computer in some cases, do restart and follow the same if you have any other unused programs.

    * Run Disk Cleanup :

    Removing unused files like Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin and other files with the help of Disk cleanup. You can access it by going into
    My computer –> Local Drive Properties –> Disk Cleanup.

    Click this button and it will analyze your computer and show you that which all files can be deleted and how much space can be taken out from it. Click on OK and your files will be removed by the tool. You must run this cleanup at least once in a Month. Also If you are having multiple drives, do perform the same operation on others.

    * Defragment Your Drives :

    Lets first see that what is fragmented files and Defragmented files.
    Fragmented files would be the one which we can say as scattered. As these files are saved and edited from time to time therefore they get saved onto different sectors of Hard Drive. This makes computer more time to search for it and show the correct page.Disk Defragmenter collects all the similar files and take them to a single place or sector in a drive, this makes computer in finding the files more easily and more Quickly.You can run this tool once in six months, also depending on your usage. You can access this tool by going onto Start –> Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defragmenter.
    This image will make things more clear.

    * Remove Unused Network Connections :

    If you have ever made a network with one or more than one computers
    then you must have realized that it is really easy to share data. Now the problem is that when Windows boots, it patiently waits for the other computer to respond on the network, if not then it keeps on waiting, making you irate, untill it gets a proper answer from the other omputer
    or till the time outs. This makes the system really slow specially during Boot process. Now to disable that, Right click on "My network places" and click "Disconnect Network Drive", it will show you all the drive to disconnect and you can choose from there, which are of no use.

    * Remove Startup Items :

    When computer Boots, you would be able to see the some icons in the System Tray, these might look to you as shortcuts but they are like Burden on your computer as computer has to start each of these application and thus making it slower. These Startup items can be removed by a called "msconfig". Go to Run –> type msconfig and click Startup tab. In that tab click "Disable all" and the Restart you computer. Now this will make the booting of your computer real fast.
